II. Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

 

Program SLO #5: Assess, plan, implement and evaluate community oral health services, including health promotions and disease prevention in variety of settings. 

 

November 22, 2014. Healthcare Resource Fair at Los Angeles Trade Technical College. One of the many community events we participate in during senior year.  Hundreds attended this informative event which help many members of the downtown LA community sign up for health insurance.  The population consisted of mostly Hispanics and African Americans.  Our table at the fair was a place where you could get information about our school's upcoming dental screenings and free cleanings.  We also provided oral hygiene instruction on brushing, flossing, and interdental aids on typodonts.  Samples of toothpaste and denture adhesive were given out to adults and for children we had toothbrushes and computer game CDs. Program SLO #6: Provide planned educational services using effective interpersonal communication skills and educational strategies to promote oral health for individuals and groups of diverse populations.

 

November 12, 2014.  West Los Angeles College's Child Development Center.  The senior class dressed up and preformed skits in front of the three classrooms of preschoolers on topics such as brushing, flossing, and fighting decay.  In my group, I am wearing red and I play the role of the evil sugar bug that damages the big white tooth with cavities and the Tooth Defender, a super hero, battles me with her giant toothbrush. The children had lots of fun that day and so did we.

 

Program SLO #7: Provide the values of oral health, general health and wellness in individuals and populations with identified risk factors and develop strategies that promote health-related quality of life.

 

April 25, 2015. West Los Angeles College hosts the Colgate Bright Smiles Mobile Dental Van. Children would receive an oral screening and goody bag inside the van and then visit our college's dental clinic to receive a fun, interactive oral hygiene instruction session with puppets.
